Mastering Your Video Assessment: Tips for Applicants to the Brooks School’s Graduate Programs
Tom O’Toole, Executive Director of the Master of Public Administration, shares insights into a unique and valuable part of the Cornell Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy’s graduate application process, specifically, the video assessment.
This requirement applies to applicants across our professional master’s programs: Master of Public Administration (MPA), Master of Health Administration (MHA), Master of Science in Data Science and Public Policy (DSPP), and Master of Environmental and Sustainability Policy (ESP).
Why a Video Assessment?
You might wonder what we can learn about you from a video assessment that we can’t already learn from your application materials, transcripts, resume/CV, statement of purpose, or letters of recommendation.
The truth is, this component offers a different and valuable perspective on you as an applicant, particularly on how you think on your feet, communicate under pressure, and present yourself as a future leader in public affairs, health care, data science, or sustainability policy creation.
What We’re Looking For
Can You Think on Your Feet?
The fields of public administration, health management, policy, and environmental sustainability require professionals who can respond thoughtfully and calmly to dynamic challenges. While your written materials demonstrate your analytical and writing skills, the video assessment shows your ability to organize and express your ideas spontaneously.
Tip: This is not a filmmaking exercise. Avoid adding titles, graphics, sound effects, or other editing elements, as these can distract from the authenticity of your response.
Are You Taking This Seriously?
Like any professional interview, your presentation matters. The way you appear and conduct yourself communicates your readiness for graduate study and leadership.
Attire:
- Dress as you would for a professional job interview (business casual to professional attire is ideal).
- Avoid busy patterns or flashy accessories.
Body Language:
- Sit upright with good posture.
- Maintain natural eye contact with the camera.
- Use hand gestures sparingly.
- Smile naturally and convey confidence.
Energy & Enthusiasm:
- Let your passion for public service, whether in governance, health, data, or environmental leadership, come through. Authentic enthusiasm leaves a strong impression.
No Studying Required
Many applicants feel anxious about what questions might be asked. The good news? These questions are not designed to test technical knowledge.
Instead, they help us understand your clarity of purpose, why you want to pursue graduate study, and how you envision contributing to the public good.
To prepare, reflect on:
- Why are you pursuing this particular degree (MPA, MHA, DSPP, or ESP)?
- How does this program align with your professional goals?
- The qualities that make an effective leader in your field
Practice Makes Perfect
Before recording your official responses, try practicing with a few prompts (not actual questions from the assessment).
Record yourself, review the video, and, if possible, seek feedback from a mentor, family member, or faculty member. Pay attention to pacing, clarity, and nonverbal cues, such as body language.
Technical Guidelines
To ensure a smooth experience, please follow these technical recommendations:
- Video Length & Format: You’ll have multiple short questions. Each response is typically 1–2 minutes, with the full assessment lasting around 10–15 minutes.
- Recording Environment: Choose a quiet, well-lit space, face a light source to ensure clear visibility, and use a neutral background without distractions.
- Audio & Camera Quality: Use a clear microphone (built-in or external), position the camera at eye level, and test your setup before beginning.
- Testing Equipment: Test your camera, microphone, and internet connection in advance. Close other browser tabs and applications, and make sure your device is plugged in or fully charged.
Addressing Nerves and Anxiety
It’s completely natural to feel nervous—most applicants do. Remember, we’re not expecting perfection.
We’re looking for authenticity, reflection, and personality. Speak as if you’re having a thoughtful conversation with a trusted colleague about your goals and motivations.
